The first ever press image for Color Riche was simply a shot of a handheld mirror showing the reflection of a woman’s lips, by the legendary phorgrapher, Irving Penn. Those lips happened to belong to Andie MacDowell, and the campaign marked the first time she worked with the brand. The actress subsequently became a L’Oréal Paris spokesperson. Irving Penn worked on Color Riche campaigns for eight years. Penn had sworn he would never show his commercial work in a museum exhibition, preferring his fine art photography. Yet, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York held a retrospective of his work, Penn chose to include a single commercial photograph. His first visual for Color Riche made the cut. And then, a legend was born…
